A few weeks ago, Shiran posted a Family Guy clip about film noir. Here are a couple more clips that people might enjoy, about different movies that people may know or love. I apologize that the first one isn't better quality but you can blame the FCC for Copyright Laws on that one.
Hopefully they work. If they don't let me know, and I will try to do them over again.

First off, props for posting these two videos up & double props for opening up my mind to the vast world of "hulu" video (hopefully they'll have an even more elclectic array of multimedia to choose from....)
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the content of the videos themselves, I'm actually qute surprised that I enjoyed the Family Guy skits so much ---> mainly for the reason that I'm a much bigger fan of the "South Park", believing that Matt Stone & Trey Parker do a much better job of using the art of humor to promote social commentary when compared with Seth MacFarlane. But yes, these two videos (especially the second one) were extremely creative!
In regards to the first video, one can tell that whoever wrote the dialogue has either studied film extensively or has prior film-making experience. This can be seen in Peter's use of the phrase, "It insists upon itself." This phrase imedietly getting the reaction of "What does that even mean" from Louis (who seems to be portraying the hoi polloi, which isn't as film literate). This short video also brings up the brilliant point of showing that someone with a deep knowledge in film & cinematography can find flaws in movies that are universally loved and considered "perfect movies" by those with a shallower knowledge of the subject itself.
I'd really like to get Bennett's opinion on this (whether or not The Godfather "insisted upon itself" mainly for the simple fact of me remebering him enjoying the movie very much and being utterly shocked when I first mentioned that fact that I myself have never seen the trilogy....
In regards to the brilliant parody displayed in the second video, I found it to be much more professional - Mainly for the fact that it was much longer and the parody itself empossed the entire film, from start to finish. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but the this Shawshank Redemption parody took up an entire Family Guy episode?)
ReplyDeleteI know for certain that Bennett would really enjoy this parody since I have heard him criticize the film on numerous occaisons as being "too simplistic." On the flip side of the coin, I have numerous friends who have stated time and time again that that is "one of their favorite movies of all time" (I have to take their opinion with a grain of salt when comparing it to Bennett's since the vast majority of them don't have enough expertise to teach an entire-semester course on the subject...) In either case, all this debate has cause me to make it a personal goal to see the film before the end of the school year ;-)
My favorite Peter quote from this video was:
"Even though we've only had one conversation, you can tell that we'll be life-long friends. And since you're black & I'm white, that'll make it more special for the audience" (...pause... stares at audience....)
P.S. - Can Jimmy Cassidy please enlighten me on the subject of who David Cassidy was?
That Family Guy episode made my day when it first aired. 1) Cuz I love movies. 2) Cuz I love Stephen King. 3) Cuz I love Family Guy. It was like the perfect ice cream sundae.
ReplyDeleteI also find it a little unsettling that I agree with the dimwit Peter about the Godfather. People always say it is like the perfect movie and it is fantastic, but I just think it's OK. I can never really get into it as much as other people. I notice how well it was acted and directed and I acknowledge that without argument, but I guess the story itself just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe in another life I'll like it better.
1. The first one played, the second one did not. But, my computer is antediluvian.
ReplyDelete2. David Cassidy is a teen pop-idol from the 70's, lead singer for the fake band, the Partridge Family, and starred in the sit-com of the same name. He is iconic, I suppose for a lot of stuff, none of it complimentary to him.
3. The Family Guy video was hilarious. I suppose "insists upon itself" is a synonym for the catch-all criticism, "pretentious." Frankly, it is a valid criticism, but in this case, the pretention works. I am a big fan of this film, and number 2 as well. But, this video is really brilliant, in that it speaks to how difficult it is to buck the trend when it comes to one's opinion of works of art considered by society as "great." There are certain people who simply take pleasure in disliking anything that society as a whole says is great. Then there are those who simply go along. They really have no opinion, because their analytical powers are simply not strong enough to function on their own, without help. In the words of Warden Ranken, "your brain is too small imagine it." I like to believe that I am immune to all that, and that I judge all works on ther merit. I suppose that I delude myself in this, as in so much else. However, I have some documentary evidence to support my thesis. It is a series of blog entries I wrote on my old Xanga in reference to the film "Syriana." I recommend both the film, and my blog entries on it very highly. Of course, I think my old Xanga should be required reading for everyone. I may be prejudiced in this, but I doubt it.
4. I liked Shawshank very much. I just felt it lacked a certain moral ambiguity.
